Miklós Maros, 1943-


MIKLÓS MAROS was born in Pécs,Hungary,in 1943. He studied composition at the Béla Bartók conservatory and the Ferenc Liszt academy in Budapest with Rezsö Sugár and Ferenc Szabó and 1968-1972 at the College of Music in Stockholm with Ingvar Lidholm and György Ligeti. In 1971, his works reached the international scene, with performances at the ISCM World Music Days in London and the Zagreb Biennale. He also served as teacher throughout the 1970s, first at the Electronic Studio in Stockholm( EMS) and later as lecturer at the College of Music in Stockholm.

 

Miklós Maros received the Christ Johnson small prize for young promising composers in 1979. In 1980-1981 he held a position as ´composer in residence´ in Berlin and later on, 1983-1984, he was ´composer in residence´ in Falun. Since then, he has been freelance composer. From 1990, he receives the Lifetime Artist´s Award of the Swedish Government.

The Maros Ensemble, formed in 1972, has by now premiered 150 contemporary works by composers from Sweden and abroad.Maros has also conducted numerous other ensembles and orchestras, such as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, Kammersveit Reykjavikur, Umeå Sinfonietta and Komorni Ansambl Europhonie Zagreb.

 

Miklós Maros is probably one of the internationally most widely performed Swedish contemporary composers. His works are performed and broadcasted not only across Europe, but also in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and Asia.
Maros oeuvre is rich and varied.The work list for example includes four symphonies, stage music, numerous concerts, songs and choral works, organ works and a multitude of chamber music. The Swedish Art Music Society has previously published Maros´ Quintetto per corno e quartetto d´archi (2002) .
